I had the opportunity to visit Woodchurch Wines in Kent a couple of weeks ago and jumped at the opportunity. There is nothing quite like being surrounded by vineyards and then tasting the wines from that very vineyard. Add in some spectacular views of Romney Marsh and the English Channel it is just about perfect.
Having strolled through the vineyards and chatted with Graham Barbour, the owner (along with his wife) I recorded this interview. Afterwards I had the opportunity to taste the Classic Cuvee and found it to be very good. Quite mineral with good structure and the palate developing in my mouth and becoming fuller. I mentioned to Graham that to sit here with this view, this wine and Kent strawberries would be a utopia. He agreed and is keen to develop a visitors centre which I am sure will prove to be a big attraction.
Visiting the vineyards and meeting the owner really gives the opportunity to sense their passion and love which is exactly the characteristics that Graham showed. It is no small move to purchase and buy a vineyard in the UK and I am so pleased that Woodchurch is doing so well. I can’t wait to return at harvest time and compile a written report.
